USS Mercy and USS Comfort started off as Super Tankers

Fun fact : USS Mercy and Comfort started life out as commercial oil tankers of the San Clemente class. The San Clemente-class oil tanker is a class of Oil tankers built by National Steel and Shipbuilding Company, San Diego. The size places them in the category of super tankers. They were built to serve the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System. Also her crew that operates the ships non hospital functions are Merchant Mariners, not Navy. The Navy beside doctors and corpsman have detachment of Boatswain’s mates for small boat operation, and an aviation Boatswains mate team for helicopter flight operation.
