Police have seized approximately 16.5 tons of cocaine worth over 1 billion dollars from a South Philadelphia port.
The U.S. Attorney’s office said the massive seizure was taken from a large ship at the Packer Marine Terminal on Tuesday.
Ivan Durasevic, the second mate and another crew member, Fonofaavae Tiasage, are charged with conspiracy to possess cocaine aboard a ship. The two admitted the ship stopped and loaded 33,000 pounds of cocaine while off the coast of South America from 14 small boats. Durasevic said he was paid $50,000 for his effort.
Ship tracker shows the ship’s previous ports of call were the Bahamas on June 13, Panama on June 9, Peru on May 24, and Colombia on May 19.
The ship MSC Gayane is flagged in Libera and was launched one year ago.
