The U.S. Coast Guard led the largest water evacuation ever of more than 500,000 people from Manhattan following the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks on the World Trade Center towers. More were rescued and moved by boats than were moved during the evacuation of around 340,000 allied troops at Dunkirk. Many people were trapped on the south side of the twin towers and the only way out was by boats. And America’s boats, their Captains and crews delivered. We will never forget your heroic actions. Well done.
